Thank you for sharing this information. You and your colleagues (and not BNC) in this instance are on the right track. The evidence for that is not only in terms of electoral support ("as in the case of Hamas, winning at least in the 2006 elections"), as you mention, but also in the long-held views of many Palestinians in the diaspora (and also, increasingly now, within the West Bank itself--check out Palestinian reaction to Abbas's speech at the UN and political analyst Hani Al Masri's articles).
