Hamutal, I am glad to be having this conversation with you. I have forever been hearing about Israeli "existential anxiety" from liberal Jewish advocates for "peace" such as J Street, as I am hearing it from you now. The way I see it, this anxiety is generated whenever political Zionism is threatened, because the identity of so many Jews is tied to it through education and upbringing. The fact is, being both “pro-peace and pro-Israel” is a contradiction in terms. When it came down to it, J Street, for example, aligned itself with the hawkish American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and has been urging Democrats to sponsor the McCaul-Meeks resolution on Israel. This resolution pledges Congress’s support for Israel in its defense against Hamas and other Palestinian armed resistance. J Street receives funding from George Soros, a liberal Jewish billionaire megadonor. Like you, J Street protests against state violence and repression of Palestinian rights while rejecting true solidarity with us, perpetuating divisions between us (as in our conversation here) and failing to challenge entrenched Zionist dogmas.
