Being "compassionate towards one's people" and holding Zionist views are two different things. It's not a question of not being "a good enough anti-occupation activist." The forcible expulsion of Palestinians and the subsequent establishment of Israel is and continues to be immoral and unethical. Those who say or believe that it was, nevertheless, "necessary" for the survival and safety of the Jewish people are taking their "compassion" for their own people to an absurd and inhuman level. I am not saying that's what you believe; it's just that you haven't explicitly said otherwise.
